http://nifplay.org/polar-husky.html - a really neat page Joni found that describes play across species, suggesting that play is a form of non-verbal language. In terms of religion, it makes you wonder - what is the difference between "playing" a game that is religious and "playing" one that is not? If soft, mimicked, or symbolic violence in VR is a sort of instinctive "play" outlet, then what about virtual reality experiences that involve violence? Is playing Left Behind "playful" in the same way as, say, World of Warcraft or Black and White? And if we move out of the realm of VR, is there some other kind of religious "play?" Can one be "playful" about one's beliefs? Maybe - but what happens if one is? Is there anything lost, or not?
